The Quiet Loss: Art Disappearing
The storage problem: NFTs are commonly understood as “on-chain” art, but the reality is different. An NFT token on the blockchain typically contains only a URL or IPFS hash pointing to:
- A JSON metadata file (hosted on a server or IPFS)
- That metadata contains a link to the actual media file (hosted off-chain)
When the platform hosting those files shuts down and stops paying, the files become inaccessible. The token still exists on the blockchain — but it points to nothing.
Key statistic: 27% of top NFT collections relied on centralized hosting for images and metadata (Pinata analysis, 2025).
Specific cases of lost art:
- XCOPY has lost early works from defunct platforms (Ascribe, Digital Objects). Collectors track these as “lost XCOPYs.”
- A Beeple piece sold for $66,666 on Nifty Gateway points to a JSON file on Gemini’s servers. If that server goes dark, the $66,666 token references a 404.
- Nifty Gateway attempted to migrate some metadata to Arweave but confirmed that some older NFTs cannot be migrated.
- Foundation will keep pinning IPFS content for exactly one year post-shutdown, then stops.
- Amazon Web Services removed hosting for multiple NFT projects in 2024 due to policy violations.

The Centralized vs. Decentralized Storage Spectrum

Why rejected: The search didn’t return enough detail about what Le Random actually does beyond the tagline. Without a specific news hook or recent development, it’s not actionable as a cast topic. Worth revisiting when they launch a specific exhibition or initiative.
