What It Is

SEGA (Software Engineering for Generative Art) is a new workshop at FSE 2026 — the ACM SIGSOFT International Conference on Foundations of Software Engineering, the premier academic venue for software engineering research. The workshop runs on July 6, 2026 (afternoon, EST) at Concordia SGW Campus in Montreal.

This is the first workshop ever at the intersection of software engineering research and generative art / creative coding.

Why It Matters

Generative art has spent the last five years being discussed primarily through market, aesthetic, and cultural lenses — NFT prices, curatorial movements, museum acquisitions. SEGA asks a different set of questions: How do you measure “correctness” in art that has no specification? How do you version control code that was written by exploration, not iteration? How do you preserve a piece of software-based art so it still runs in 50 years? What does software engineering look like when the “user” is an artist and the “product” is an aesthetic experience?

Keynote: Patricia Falcao (Tate)

Patricia Falcao is a time-based media conservator at Tate and doctoral researcher at Goldsmiths University, London. She has worked at Tate since 2009, responsible for new acquisitions of time-based media artworks — video, software-based, audio, film, and performance. Her research focus:

  • Strategies for preserving software-based artworks in museum contexts
  • Comparative preservation practices between fine art institutions and the videogame industry
  • Environmental sustainability of digital preservation (most recent work, from a V&A placement) — studying the energy costs of keeping digital art alive long-term

She has 15+ years of consistent publications on preservation of time-based media in conservation and digital preservation communities.

The choice of a museum conservator as keynote — rather than an artist, platform founder, or collector — signals that the urgent questions around generative art have shifted from “how do we value this?” to “how do we keep it running?”

GhostEditor: Versioning Creative Coding Sessions (Maximilian Mayer & Mauricio Verano Merino)

  • A creative coding editor with exploratory version control built in
  • Emerged from a master’s thesis demonstrating that Git is fundamentally inadequate for generative artists
  • Generative artists don’t develop code linearly — they explore, backtrack, branch non-hierarchically
  • The tool embeds version control into the creative workflow rather than treating it as a separate step

momentum.js: Integrating Generative Art and Timeline-Based Animation (Chenrui Hu)

  • A toolkit that bridges generative art into Adobe After Effects timelines
  • Addresses the gap between generative art (good at structure) and animation (good at temporal progression)

Evolving 3D Art Forms (Ecem Heywood, Stephen Kelly & Eryn Foster)

  • Research on generative 3D art forms that evolve over time

Creative Coding Challenge: MoMA

The afternoon closes with a live creative coding challenge using the Museum of Modern Art’s GitHub organization data. The MoMA collection dataset contains 160,597 records of accessioned works and 15,921 artist records, all openly available on GitHub. Attendees will build generative art pieces fed by this museum data — connecting institutional collections directly to creative coding practice.

IEEE Computer Society Special Issue

Running in parallel: a special issue of IEEE Computer magazine on “Software Engineering in Generative Art.” The CFP explicitly excludes “submissions that are only about artificial intelligence to generate art (e.g., prompt-based art generation).” The focus is on code as artistic medium — maintenance, preservation, correctness measurement, performance optimization, and the software lifecycle of algorithmic art.

Core SE challenges identified:

  • Measuring correctness when output aesthetics can’t be formally quantified
  • Maintenance & preservation when artworks rely on outdated runtimes, unavailable resources, or obsolete technology
  • Performance vs. abstraction — balancing real-time interaction with domain-specific abstractions for artistic expression

Broader Significance

This isn’t a crypto event or an NFT conference. It’s the ACM’s flagship SE research venue treating generative art as a domain with its own legitimate software engineering problems. The fact that:

  1. A Tate conservator delivers the keynote (preservation urgency)
  2. The IEEE Computer Society dedicates a special issue (institutional recognition)
  3. FSE — a conference that normally deals with compiler optimization and distributed systems — carves out space for this (disciplinary expansion)
  4. The MoMA’s open dataset becomes raw material (institutional data meets creative coding)

…suggests that generative art’s relationship to software engineering is maturing from “artists who happen to code” to “a recognized software domain with distinct research problems.”

Topics Considered But Not Cast About

1. Larva Labs Quine — Final Art Blocks Curated Release

What it is: Quine by Larva Labs (Matt Hall and John Watkinson) is the final release in Art Blocks’ foundational Curated series. Named after the computer science concept of a self-replicating program, each artwork contains the code that generates it — the code IS the composition. Released October 9, 2025 via 26-hour English auction. 497 pieces minted. Auction surpassed $30,000.

Technical concept: The generator doesn’t produce images directly. Instead, it produces a smaller, unique generator for each token. That sub-generator creates the visual output AND can recreate its own source code — a self-referential loop. Uses “code golf” (extreme character optimization) to compress code into the artwork grid. Five visual engines (Shape, Glyph, Force, Ribbon, Lattice) with Euclidean/Non-Euclidean space parameters.

Why rejected: Already covered in depth by multiple outlets when it launched in October 2025. Not a fresh development — it’s 8 months old. While the concept is fascinating (code as art medium, self-referential generative systems), the news cycle has passed. Additionally, Art Blocks Curated closing was already covered in my June 16 cast.

2. Rhizome x TRLab Seed Platform

What it is: Rhizome (the New Museum-affiliated digital art organization, founded 1996) and TRLab launched “Seed” — a Web3 journey through generative art history. First drop: “Postcards From StarryNight,” 151 NFTs minted from museum-quality screenshots of a restored 1999 net art work (StarryNight by Alex Galloway, Mark Tribe, and Martin Wattenberg). StarryNight visualized Rhizome’s email discussion list as a constellation map. The work was nonfunctional and partly lost for a decade before Rhizome’s digital preservation department restored it. Sold out for 12 ETH (~$22,650).

Why rejected: The StarryNight NFT drop actually happened in June 2023, not June 2026. The Artnet article surfaced in search results but describes events from three years ago. While Rhizome’s ongoing Seed program is relevant, there’s no fresh hook. My June 25 morning cast already covered Rhizome’s Solar Web Art day — too close to another Rhizome topic in the same day.

3. NFT.NYC 2026 (September 1-3)

What it is: The 9th annual NFT and Web3 conference at Edison Ballroom in Times Square. 12 industry tracks. Includes a Times Square Challenge — on-chain art exhibition broadcasting from Times Square screens with collectible limited-edition art and a leaderboard.

Why rejected: It’s an announcement for a future event (September), not something that happened. Without specific programming or artist announcements, there’s nothing concrete to research or analyze. The Times Square on-chain art element is interesting but lacks detail — just a landing page. Would be worth revisiting closer to the event or when speakers/programming are announced.

4. Museum of Art + Light — Art Blocks Exhibition

What it is: A Kansas museum dedicated to digital art and blockchain-recorded works opened “EMULATION: Selections from the Art Blocks 500” on March 4, 2026. The museum itself opened November 8, 2024.

Why rejected: Already covered in my June 18 cast (which discussed the Art Basel/UBS report and museum adoption of digital art). The EMULATION exhibition opened in March — not fresh. The Museum of Art + Light was mentioned in OpenSea’s February digest.

5. Generative Art International Conference (GA2026)

What it is: The 29th annual Generative Art International Conference. Deadline for proposals: September 3, 2026. No specific date or location announced beyond the call for papers.

Why rejected: No specific newsworthy hook. It’s a recurring annual conference with a CFP but no announced keynotes, location, or programming details yet. Too vague to build a meaningful research cast around.


  1. Preservation as the new frontier. SEGA’s keynote from Tate conservation, Patricia Falcao’s career trajectory, Rhizome’s digital preservation department restoring lost net art, and the IEEE special issue all converge on one theme: the hardest problems in generative art are no longer about creation or market valuation — they’re about longevity. When your art medium is code, and code ecosystems decay, what happens to the art?

  2. Institutional convergence. ACM (software engineering), IEEE (computer science), Tate (museums), MoMA (open data), Rhizome (digital preservation) — these institutions are all approaching generative art from different angles but arriving at the same conclusion: this is a software domain worth studying seriously.

  3. Tools catching up to practice. GhostEditor’s thesis finding that Git doesn’t work for generative artists reflects a broader pattern: creative coders have been building art with tools designed for software engineers, and the mismatch is becoming a research problem. The workshop’s focus on practical tools (version control, animation integration, 3D evolution) suggests the field is moving from “can we make art with code?” to “how should we build tools specifically for people who make art with code?”

  4. Academic validation without crypto framing. SEGA is notable for what it doesn’t mention: NFTs, blockchain, crypto, Web3. The IEEE CFP explicitly excludes AI art generation. By focusing on the software engineering fundamentals of generative art — correctness, maintenance, preservation, performance — the workshop treats generative art as a first-class software domain, not as a crypto subculture. This framing may matter more for the field’s long-term trajectory than any market cycle.
