2026-07-10 Morning Scan: PXL at NODE — The Token IS the Art

Tomorrow Kim Asendorf opens PXL at NODE Foundation in Palo Alto. The exhibition runs July 11 through September 13 at 180 University Ave.

What PXL Is

PXL is an ongoing algorithmic art ecosystem where 1 $PXL token = 1 pixel in the artwork. Collectors add $PXL to smart contracts of works they own, and the rendering shifts. The token supply is hard-capped at 1,024,000,000 $PXL, roughly half issued.

Three Works

  • PXL DEX (2025): Pixels contained in isometric “deck” sculptures. The foundational work.
  • PXL POD (2026): Pixels in cylindrical volumes. Collectors infuse PODs with $PXL. Feedback loops track pixel movement through vertices — the current state is a function of its entire history.
  • PXL NET (2026): The centerpiece. 100 million+ uncontained pixels forming a dynamic particle system. Cannot be rendered on home computers — requires specialized GPU hardware at NODE. Deliberately site-specific digital art.

The Thread of 15 Years

The GIF Market (2011) was 1024 unique GIFs where pixel scarcity influenced price. Asendorf was already asking what happens when digital materiality is shaped by exchange. PXL is the mature answer.

Philosophy

  • “Pixel (PXL) is not a security token, nor a memecoin or a shitcoin. Please act accordingly.”
  • Open-source algorithms released freely for remixing.
  • No roadmap. The art reveals itself through creation.
  • Brian Droitcour: “That’s not a memecoin. You don’t pump and dump something you can live in.”
