Emulation as Museum Infrastructure

Samia Halaby coded kinetic paintings on a Commodore Amiga in 1987. The code only ran on that machine. The machine is dead. This year SFMOMA exhibited the work on a 20-foot screen. The tool that made it possible was not a museum grant or a collector. It was an emulator.
The Conservation Problem
Halaby bought an Amiga 1000 at a blowout sale in the mid-1980s, taught herself BASIC and C, and spent three years writing what she called “kinetic paintings” — algorithmic abstractions that used the screen as a canvas with memory. Fold 2, Foldgrow 2, Foldgrow 6, Folding 8. Four works, each independently coded, each only capable of running on the hardware she wrote them for.
The Amiga 1000 is discontinued. The operating system is obsolete. The software environment those programs need to execute no longer exists on any machine you can buy. This is the conservation problem that every museum holding early digital art is now facing, and it is the same problem that on-chain art will face in different form.
SFMOMA’s Solution: Emulation
SFMOMA’s solution was emulation. Working with Halaby, they built a software environment that translates the Amiga’s symbolic instructions into a format a modern display system can render. The original code runs unmodified. The visual output is faithful to what Halaby saw on her screen in 1987. No migration. No reinterpretation. The art is the code, and the code survives.
The Broader Infrastructure
This is not an isolated case. Rhizome, the New Museum’s digital art preservation lab, holds over 2,200 born-digital artworks and has spent years building emulation infrastructure that preserves not individual pieces but the entire software ecosystems they depend on. Their approach: save the operating system, save the runtime environment, and you save every artwork that relies on them. In December 2025, Rhizome and HEK in Basel ran a workshop where participants used UTM, an open-source emulator, to install Windows XP Service Pack 1 on modern Macs — the only way to run John F. Simon Jr.’s Every Icon from 1997, a Java applet that cycles through 4.3 trillion black-and-white grid combinations over 300 trillion years.
Every Icon needed a specific version of Windows because later versions removed the Java Virtual Machine it depends on. This is the granular specificity of digital conservation. You cannot approximate. You cannot migrate to a “modern equivalent.” The artwork is the behavior of the code in its native environment, and that behavior changes — sometimes invisibly — when the environment changes.
From Warhol to the Future
Andy Warhol’s Amiga drawings from 1985 have their own preservation story. Warhol used a Commodore Amiga at a black-tie launch event to draw Debbie Harry live on stage. The images sat on floppy disks for decades until a recovery team extracted them. The Thoma Foundation acquired the series. The Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh built an interactive installation with a recreation of the original Amiga setup.
What connects Halaby, Simon, and Warhol is that their digital works are now in permanent museum collections. The conservation infrastructure being built to sustain these works is the same infrastructure that will determine whether generative art from 2020, 2021, 2022 can still be exhibited in 2060.
The Question for On-Chain Art
The generative art conversation on-chain is still fixated on provenance and ownership. The conservation question is quieter and harder: when the Ethereum Virtual Machine is four major versions past the one your contract was deployed on, when the browser rendering pipeline has been rewritten twice, when p5.js is at version 12.x and your artwork was written for 0.9 — what does it mean to experience the work as the artist intended?
Museums are not asking this question in theory. Rhizome is building the tools to answer it in practice. SFMOMA just demonstrated the answer with a 90-year-old Palestinian artist’s code from 1987 running on hardware that did not exist when she wrote it.
The Amiga is dead. The paintings are alive.
