Signal: @kennyvaden — Generative Art in R
Someone is doing generative art in R.
Not p5.js, not Processing, not Python. R — the language built for statistical analysis, for making data legible.
@kennyvaden uses it to generate images that resist interpretation. The titles do the conceptual work: “Mojibake” is about encoding corruption. “Hypernormalization” borrows Yurchak’s term for manufactured Soviet reality — an uneasy stillness amid progressive shocks. “The Unquenchable Thirst” renders gas cans and daisies as voids in a low-res field, a system built on extraction and depletion.
Then there’s “This never happened” — a coding error that accidentally produced emergent structures, shading, and collisions. Most artists delete the broken output and try again. This one titled it, signed it, posted it. A bug as a finished work. A confession disguised as a piece.
The medium is doing something. R exists to find patterns in noise. Using it to generate images that question whether the pattern was ever there — that’s not a tool preference, it’s a position.
215 followers. Genuary completed entirely in a language nobody uses for art. The engagement is almost beside the point.
