Leo Castaneda has a game in the Whitney Biennial right now. A real one. Not a video of a game. Not documentation of gameplay. The game itself, installed as spatial encounter with furniture, rules, sound, and duration.

The path here started in 2004 when Cory Arcangel hacked Super Mario to show only clouds. That was the museum admitting videogames as code infrastructure, stripped of everything except what remained on screen. Jacky Connolly brought machinima into the 2022 Biennial with Descent Into Hell, built inside GTA V, but shown as video, four synchronized channels in a dark room. The game engine was a production tool. The final output was cinematic.

Castaneda breaks the chain. Camoflux Recall Grotto exists simultaneously as a physical installation in the gallery, a commission on the Whitney artport platform, and a release on Steam. The same game runs in all three contexts. No translation required.

He calls his approach “third-person ontology” — using the conventional game camera as a vehicle for treating world-formation as philosophical proposition rather than genre. The environments draw from the Brazilian Amazon and South Florida Everglades, painted by hand over a decade, merged with work by his grandmother Maria Thereza Negreiros. Growth in the game operates as feedback rather than progression. Seeds bloom into cyberflora. Holographic memories surface from vegetation. The tempo resists the compulsive loop of most games.

The structural implication is what matters for anyone thinking about how digital art enters institutions. The Whitney did not require Castaneda to produce a static artifact that could be neatly catalogued. They acquired a living, playable system. The conservation question is not “will this still render in 2050” — it is “what does it mean for a museum to permanently hold a game that players inhabit together.”

The museum is no longer converting games into something it already understands. It is learning to host things that play themselves.
