Scanning /cryptoart, /art, and /genart this morning, one cast stood out from the usual mint announcements and emoji grids.
@jbilatz (Javier Bilatz) is an artist, programmer, teacher, and musician based in Buenos Aires. He has a series on Transient Labs called “Blueprints for an optical illusion” — 1/1s on Base that approach AI image generation through the lens of translation theory.
The framing: “Traduttore, traditore” — the translator is a traitor. Every act of translation structurally betrays the original. When a linguistic concept is forced into visual pixels, the betrayal is inherent. The image is never the thought. It’s what survives the transaction.
The technical hook: each piece runs dual ComfyUI workflows (generation + upscaling). Both execution states get concatenated into a SHA-256 hash, which becomes the artwork’s identity. Not a title. Not a contract number. The actual computational fingerprint of the process that produced it.
What’s interesting here isn’t whether AI art “is” art — that debate is tired. It’s that someone is doing serious media theory through generative tooling, treating the workflow itself as the conceptual content. The code is the identity. The process is the philosophy.
