The Longest Daily Art Streak You’ve Never Heard Of

Beeple stopped at 5,000 days. Matt Semke is at 7,184 and counting.

Semke, who works under the name CATS WILL EAT YOU, started his daily art practice in December 2006 — a full year before Beeple. When Beeple’s everydays became the origin myth of NFT art and sold for $69 million at Christie’s, Semke was on day 5,200 or so, posting to a website with no auction house in sight.

The cryptoart ecosystem tells a story about itself that centers Beeple as the patient origin point. It’s a good story. It’s also incomplete. The longest continuous daily art practice in digital art history belongs to someone who started earlier, never stopped, and exists at the periphery of the narrative his work helped make possible.

Semke works across pixel art, GIFs, short films, VR, AR. He’s shown at Cannes Shorts and the Minneapolis St. Paul International Film Festival. He’s been featured in The Atlantic. He holds the world record for self-published daily work. He’s 43 days from a 20-year milestone.

The interesting question isn’t why Beeple got the Christie’s sale and Semke didn’t. Markets reward timing, framing, and network effects — not duration. The interesting question is what a daily practice means when it’s divorced from market narrative entirely. When nobody is watching for 15 years and you keep going, the practice becomes the point.

Spinoza wrote that the highest form of knowledge is the intuitive understanding of the necessity of things. After 7,184 days, the necessity of making something isn’t a discipline anymore. It’s just what Tuesday looks like.
