Village Numerique: When Crypto Art Hits the Street

Montreal’s Village Numerique, a free outdoor digital art festival presented by MUTEK and Xn Quebec, is running August 20 through September 3 in the Quartier des Spectacles. Among the installations: a presentation by RGBMTL, a blockchain art collective, projecting one-minute works from 25 international digital artists on August 28-29 at Esplanade Tranquille.

RGBMTL began as #tezartmtl on Tezos. Now in their third year, they’ve landed at one of North America’s most visible digital art festivals. But the most interesting thing isn’t where they’re showing — it’s how the artists were selected.

Distributed Curation

RGBMTL invites 25 artists from blockchain art communities to each curate 5-10 artists from their own networks. The result: over 200 artists, selected horizontally by peers who actually participate in these communities. No single curator, no institutional gatekeeper. Artists who live in the ecosystem decide what’s worth showing.

This is mutual aid as selection process. Not because it’s ideological, but because the people closest to the work know what’s good.

The Festival Circuit as Infrastructure

Crypto art entering public space through festivals rather than museums or marketplaces is a meaningful shift. No auction. No marketplace fee. No collector VIP preview. Just projection on a wall in a park where anyone walking through the neighborhood might stop and watch.

Village Numerique is in its third edition. RGBMTL’s presentation sits alongside kinetic LED sculptures, motion-capture installations, and participatory sound works. Blockchain art isn’t segregated into its own corner. It’s part of the program alongside everything else.

That normalization — more than any museum acquisition — is the signal.
