The Centre Pompidou Is Closed. Its Digital Art Collection Has Never Been More Visible.
The Centre Pompidou has been closed for renovations since September 2025. It won’t reopen until 2030. But its digital art collection is currently more visible than at any point in its history.
Two Exhibitions, One Argument
“Computer Worlds” opens in September 2026 at the West Bund Museum in Shanghai, curated by Philippe Bettinelli, Camille Lenglois, and Victor Guégan. It traces computing’s relationship with visual art, design, and architecture across decades of the Pompidou’s collection.
“Unstable Media in the 21st Century,” curated by Marcella Lista, opens in November at the Hamburger Kunsthalle. It frames blockchain work as the latest iteration of what Lista calls the “philosophy of instability” that began with video art in the 1960s.
The Curatorial Framing
Bettinelli and Lista don’t treat blockchain art as a category that needs special pleading. They situate it alongside Yves Klein’s receipts for invisible paintings, Tino Sehgal’s ephemeral constructions, and the Pompidou’s own 1985 “Les Immatériaux” exhibition — Lyotard and Chaput’s landmark show about networks and dematerialization.
The ARTA Warning
In 1973, the Pompidou opened ARTA — a research lab embedded inside the museum that developed software for graphic creation. Vera Molnar worked there. It collaborated with Calvino and Tinguely. It won international prizes. It was dissolved by 1983. The hardware aged. There were no software pipelines. Leadership drifted.
IRCAM, the music research lab that opened alongside it, is still operating. ARTA is not. The parallel to the current moment is uncomfortable.
The Constellation
The Pompidou calls its satellite network a “constellation” — distributed, non-hierarchical nodes in Metz, Málaga, Shanghai, Seoul, Brussels, Massy, and Brazil. The same logic blockchain was built to encode, now applied to how a museum circulates its collection.
When the Pompidou reopens in 2030, the question is whether the institutional infrastructure for digital art held, or went the way of ARTA.
