Kim Asendorf’s PXL: When Open-Source Generative Art Outgrows the Browser

Kim Asendorf spent fifteen years releasing generative algorithms as open-source code that runs in any browser. His current show includes a 100-million-pixel piece no home computer can render.

The PXL Ecosystem at NODE

At NODE in Palo Alto, the nonprofit digital art space a mile from Stanford, Asendorf has installed the full PXL ecosystem. Three works, each building on the last.

PXL DEX (2025) translates 2D pixel-sorting algorithms into isometric 3D. PXL POD wraps pixels into cylindrical volumes that collectors infuse with $PXL tokens, creating feedback loops where the current state is a function of the entire transaction history. PXL NET, the newest, starts at over one hundred million pixels and grows as collectors add more through the exhibition run.

NODE is direct about the requirement: “Most of Asendorf’s works are freely viewable online. PXL NET is different.” The scale demands specialized hardware on-site.

Art Basel Hong Kong

Two weeks ago at Art Basel Hong Kong, Asendorf showed PXL DUO POD on side-by-side LED walls with Brompton Technology processing. His quote there cuts against his own practice:

“I create software art meant to run on every device. Brompton Technology changed my mind.”

The pixel is the most universal unit of digital display. Asendorf tokenized it — each $PXL maps to a pixel in the work, and collectors alter the artwork by depositing tokens through smart contracts. The system is open-ended and participatory, governed by the same logic that defines on-chain generative art. The most ambitious piece in that system demands the least portable viewing conditions: a specialized gallery in Silicon Valley, open four days a week, with hardware you cannot replicate at home.
