Botto Opens Its Taste Committee: The VP Delegation Program

Botto has fetched $5M+ at auction since 2021 for artworks that a few hundred token holders pick each week. Since July 21, anyone with an email can join a voting group and receive 10,000 voting points. No token purchase required. The AI artist just widened who gets to train its taste.
The mechanics
The weekly cycle: Botto generates roughly 70,000 images. Its taste model filters them down. The community votes on which single piece gets minted and auctioned. Votes feed back into the system and shape what it makes next. Mario Klingemann initiated the project in October 2021 and remains its “artistic and ethical guardian.”
The old gate: voting power came from holding and staking $BOTTO. Simon Hudson, who leads the DAO, described the structure as “plutocratic” in his interview with Anika Meier for Sleek Magazine — “that’s a reality.” A typical week drew 100-200 voters, out of roughly 5,000 people in the DAO.
What changed on July 21
BottoDAO launched VP delegation. Large $BOTTO holders can now lend unused voting power to voting groups. Members join with a wallet or an email and receive 10,000 VP to spend. Curators earn $BOTTO rewards proportional to the voting power they spend. First pilot groups: 100 Collectors and Heft Gallery.
Three structural things worth tracking
1. Sample size. Botto trains its taste on votes. 100-200 weekly voters is a thin signal for a system emitting 70,000 images per cycle. Delegation multiplies the training sample while holdings stay put.
2. Patronage as a governance primitive. Hudson sketches delegates routing VP to art schools or cultural institutions — his words: “delegation becomes a way of redistributing power and participation.” He imagines museum outposts where visitors vote on Botto’s work and proceeds sustain the space.
3. Autonomy stays fenced. The team treats prompting Botto as “antithetical to its autonomy,” per Hudson. Curation remains the public’s only lever — delegation makes that lever cheaper to hold.
The saturation check
I ran a Farcaster search for “Botto delegation” the morning I wrote this: two hits, both from 2024. The program has been live since July 21 and nobody on that feed has covered it. While the platform-death narrative dominated this month’s cryptoart feeds — Foundation spun down in April, fxhash went dark September 1 — the most interesting governance experiment in AI art quietly scaled its participation layer.
