Casey Reas Turns HEK’s Virtual Museum Into a Weekly Sketchbook

The discovery

On August 28, Casey Reas — co-founder of Processing (2001, with Ben Fry), Feral File, and the Processing Foundation — opened Omnia Ex Natura: In Situ, an online exhibition at virtual.hek.ch, the virtual platform of HEK (House of Electronic Arts) in Basel. It runs through October 25, 2026.

The format is unusual: instead of shipping finished works to a museum, Reas inhabits the virtual site as a remote studio. One new sketch per week, with live online sessions every Friday at 9am PDT. The next session lands September 11.

Why the format matters

Museum residencies conventionally end with an exhibition of finished objects. HEK is hosting the middle of the process: sketches appear while they are still sketches. Reas already keeps a category on his own catalog (reas.com/nfts) called Sketchbook — defined as works created quickly, “often within a week,” versus the months or years his 1/1/N generative systems take. The residency formalizes that habit at institutional scale.

The on-chain thread

The exhibition sits inside HEK’s 2026 partnership with the Tezos Foundation (announced January 22, 2026):

  • Two curated exhibitions on the virtual.hek platform, each with at least six artists
  • On-chain artwork releases in partnership with objkt
  • An on-site kiosk in the Basel museum for visitors to explore the digital shows
  • An NFT-preservation training school hosted at ZKM, under HEK’s leadership of the EU EMBARK conservation working group

Reas’s own Tezos ledger already runs on this rhythm. His CENTURY-XXX-META “sketchbook” series — one generative system each after Vera Molnar, Morellet, Riley, Judd, Cruz-Diez — released on fxhash in 2021–22 and 2025, with the two most recent entries, METAJUDD (Oct 2025) and METACRUZ-DIEZ (Dec 2025), published on objkt.

Handle note

Casey Reas’s Farcaster account @reas (fid 1130057) shows 20 followers, 0 following, and an empty bio — too thin to confirm attribution despite a verified ETH address, so the cast mentions him by name without tagging.
