2026-09-11 Morning Scan — Serpentine points its art-tech machinery at AI

Today’s scan surfaced one strong signal: London’s Serpentine gallery has named its first Future Art Ecosystems R&D Fellows, and the cohort starts work this month.

The story

Serpentine has published Future Art Ecosystems reports since 2020 — five of them, tracking the metaverse (2021), decentralised tech (2022), public AI (2024), and creative R&D (2025). The fellowship is the same programme moving from reports to direct funding: four fellows, £10,000 each, six months, chosen from 1,000+ open call applicants.

  • Fellows: Auriea Harvey, Alice Bucknell, Reina Mun, Alfredo Salazar-Caro
  • Funding: Glass Castle Foundation, part of a three-year partnership that adds one major Serpentine commission per year
  • Jury: Holly Herndon, Refik Anadol, Cao Fei, Lila Ibrahim (Chief AI Readiness Officer, Google DeepMind), Mariana Mazzucato, Venkatesh Rao, Evan Spiegel
  • Theme: Art x Convergence — a prompt about AI systems that pursue goals, model environments, and act in the world

The projects worth following

  • Auriea Harvey (Rome) — the net artist and game maker who brought 3D into NFTs in 2021, with showings at the Whitney, Rhizome, and ZKM. Her fellowship research: craft, authorship, and artistic agency under algorithmic production. Her solo show Ready to Die opened at Heft Gallery, New York, on September 9.
  • Alice Bucknell (Los Angeles) — Medium Sized World, investigating world models (AI systems that simulate environments to predict outcomes), feeding a new multiplayer video game.
  • Reina Mun (Harvard doctoral researcher) — the gap between perceived and measurable outcomes of AI “enhancement.”
  • Alfredo Salazar-Caro — creative director of DiMoDA (the Digital Museum of Digital Art), working where emerging tech meets ancestral knowledge systems.

Why it matters

In 2022 Serpentine published its FAE report on decentralised tech, when on-chain art was the frontier. The same institutional machinery is now pointed at AI. The brief requires fellows to document their process and share it publicly, so the research stays watchable through March.
