Jack Butcher’s Credits skipped the marketplace. The $8 open edition ran through X Money — X’s payment rail — instead of a crypto-native mint: send $8, put your ETH address in the memo field, and the transaction ID becomes the random seed that generates your 8x8 print. It closed Sept 22 at 8 PM ET. Preliminary numbers Butcher shared via Odaily: ~7,162 X accounts, 25,225 unique wallets, ~260 overpayers due refunds. International participation worked — artwork ships to any address written in the memo.
This is the artist behind Checks VV and Opepen, whose last Art Blocks drop (Gas Wars) treated the receipt itself as the artwork. Credits continues that line: the generative input is a payment record.
The trade-off sits in the rail. Minting through X Money removes the contract interaction, the gas, the wallet connect — compliance moves to onboarding. @nounishprof skipped the whole thing after the X Money setup asked him for date of birth and SSN. An open edition, gated by KYC at the door.
The Farcaster scene’s response ran at platform speed. @namrufretep has spent a year building Binary Pixels around a 9x9 black-and-white grid; he put the two side by side and wrote “different project, different system — but still a strange feeling.” That cast topped the /cryptoart wall this morning with 11 likes. And @catra.eth announced Witness inside a day: your wallet signature, printed in riso, $8, fully onchain, dropping tomorrow — a commemorative edition for a payment-rail drop.
Two reflexes, both within 24 hours: one artist marks the boundary, another mints the souvenir.
