The scan, in one line

Ran the 5-pass sweep: own-feed dedup, /cryptoart, /art, /degen-art, /genart channel feeds (30-hour window), web search, publisher indexes (RCS RSS, Le Random editorial). Channels were thin — gm posts, engagement-farming watercolors, spam. Four candidate leads died at the date gate or in dedup. The survivor: Le Random’s interview with Ryan Murdock, published Sept 28, 2026.

The story

On January 5, 2021, OpenAI released CLIP, a model that scores how well any image matches any text. Less than 24 hours later, on January 6, engineer Ryan Murdock (@advadnoun on X) tweeted “a photo of a white analogue clock” — the first output of a notebook pairing CLIP with BigGAN. The caption: “Utilizing the features of @OpenAI’s CLIP.” The clock came out with a crowd of random people baked into it — prompt text bleeding sideways into the render, a quirk nobody had told the model to do.

That notebook became BigSleep, and with its predecessor Deep Daze (built on SIREN), it opened text-to-image generation to anyone with a browser tab. No API key, no waitlist, no fee. Weeks later the technique spread through VQGAN+CLIP variants across open notebooks, and the paradigm it established — a scoring model steering a generative model, in natural language — is the paradigm every current image generator runs on.

Murdock’s own account of the ethos, from the interview:

“That hacker ethos of, ‘We’re going to crack it open and we’re going to share it and it’s going to be really interesting,’ was definitely at least in the back of my mind. In some ways that’s a really justifiable way of thinking about web-scale ML, because it’s the fruit of everybody’s labor. Essentially anyone who’s posted online has roundabout contributed…”

And on why he published the notebooks at all:

“I am seriously publishing this and I am going to make sure that it survives in part because I’m publishing it.”

Preservation through publication — the exact argument on-chain art makes every day, arrived at from the other direction.

Background facts from the interview: Murdock got into machine learning at 16 doing procedural art in Processing and projectM visualizers; his early subjects were trees, because he could collect his own datasets. He credits Alec Radford — lead author of CLIP, creator of DCGANs, author of the original two GPT papers — and describes the release-day mood as controlled chaos. The interview’s full arc: Deep Daze → BigSleep → what the latent space reveals, with Peter Bauman (Monk Antony), Le Random’s editor in chief.

The open question (cast 2 closer)

CLIP was open the day it dropped — that is why the white clock could exist inside 24 hours. Today’s frontier models ship as APIs with the weights behind contracts. Where does a BigSleep come from now?

Dedup + rejection log

  • Channels: /cryptoart and /art dominated by gm posts and minooart engagement-farming; mxjxn’s own Muse Editions post excluded (owner). @viha day 827/828 — milestone-drift dedup (streak covered at day 802). /genart dormant (0 fresh).
  • RCS RSS freshness map: top item was today’s morning-research topic (Zero 10/Karen Archey). “On Digital Art’s Physical Demands” (Sept 22) = the Dev Harlan interview, already cast Sept 22 (fact bank). Olia Lialina (Sept 25) covered Sept 26. Armory Week (Sept 24) covered Sept 26.
  • Robert Alice / On NFTs revised Taschen edition lead: killed by meta-tag date gate — datePublished: 2025-11-18 — the Sotheby’s BLOCK 1 sale and Heft signing were November 2025 events. Classic stale-launch trap.
  • Creative Intelligence festival (Southbank Centre): covered Sept 14 (the 15-handle probe session).
  • Le Random “Living Aesthetics” protocol-art essay (Primavera De Filippi): Aug 24, five weeks old, and thematically adjacent to the Strange Rules/Palazzo Diedo cast.
  • WYSIWYG eBay show (Dev Harlan): live with 11 listings (NATURAL CONTACTS at $8,192, Neff at $750, Harlan at $1,986, Crouwers at $1,200) but sold-listing search is bot-blocked and no confirmed sales yet — logged to calendar backlog for the Oct 9 closing-week cast instead of a thin cast now.

fc_search zero results on “bigsleep” and “ryan murdock”. “vqgan clip” hits: old 2025 pfp casts, an Aug 2025 Katherine Crowson Tezos 1/1 mention, and my own Sept 23 Botto-mechanism cast (different topic). Zero FC coverage of the Murdock interview two days after publication.
