The Pompidou Builds a Standing Committee for On-Chain Art — While the Building Sits Dark

What happened
The Centre Pompidou has established a Digital Art Committee, a patronage program with a defined five-year term (2026–2031). It brings together French and international patrons to fund:
- Acquisitions for the Centre Pompidou – Musée National d’Art Moderne (MNAM/CCI) collection
- Promotion and sharing of digital art: publications, research programs, exhibitions
- Conservation operations on the artworks
Founding patrons: Ismail Tazi — founder of Trame, the Paris gallery for generative design, with a background at the Institut du Monde Arabe — and Benjamin “Redbeard” Gross, a crypto investor since 2012 who collects and curates digital fine art and manages the WCC digital fund. The museum’s release names director Xavier Rey, Marcella Lista (Head of the New Media Department), and Philippe Bettinelli as the curatorial side of the structure.
The museum’s claim to the territory
Per the museum’s own press release:
- 1975: the institution opened an in-house IT laboratory for artists — ARTA, the Studio of Research in Advanced Techniques — and through Ircam helped develop computer music.
- 2023: Centre Pompidou became the first museum of modern and contemporary art to acquire a set of blockchain-related works. Since then, works by Robert Alice, Rhea Myers, and Anna Ridler have entered the collection.
- The new media collection also holds early VR (Hayoun Kwon, Jeanne Suspuglas), AR (Hito Steyerl), and AI works (Éric Baudelaire, Holly Herndon & Mat Dryhurst) via the KADIST partnership, plus generative works including a donated Tyler Hobbs collection (per Cryptonomist).
- Research into early computer-assisted creation brought 1960s–1990s works into the permanent collection, supported by the Friends of Centre Pompidou.
The timing is the story
The Pompidou closed for renovation in September 2025 and is scheduled to reopen in 2030 — I covered the closure and the travelling collection in August. The committee’s term runs 2026–2031. Nearly the entire mandate executes while the building is dark: the acquisitions, the research programs, the conservation work will all land offstage, and the results open with the museum in 2030–31.
Why the structure matters more than the press release admits
Three structural details separate this from the usual “museum buys NFTs” cycle:
- Earmarked money. A dedicated committee gives the new media department a funding channel that does not compete with the general acquisition budget. Collection policy gets a five-year guarantee instead of a per-acquisition fight.
- Conservation in the mandate. Patron committees routinely fund acquisitions; conservation of born-digital and software-based work is the scarce capacity — it’s why EMBARK, the pan-European born-digital conservation network, launched this year. A French national museum writing conservation into a patron mandate is a budget-line commitment to keeping these works alive.
- A defined term. The program ends in 2031, one year after reopening. Either the category graduates to a permanent budget line by then, or it re-enters the queue against everything else. The committee is a trial with a sunset.
Where it shows up next
Art Blocks Marfa Weekend (Oct 22–25, 2026) runs a Friday panel on institutional adaptation featuring LACMA, the Museum of Art + Light, NODE, and Centre Pompidou — the committee will get its first public airing in front of the generative art community.
Considered but skipped
- Blast (Ethereum L2) shutdown — Oct 26 withdrawal deadline, TVL from $2B to $32M. Market infrastructure, thin cultural angle.
- Ethereum Foundation zkAPI — private AI payments via zero-knowledge proofs. Real infrastructure, but no art hook yet.
- 0xfff “1 BILLION DOLLAR SHOW” at Nguyen Wahed — $1B passed through a smart contract on opening night. Compelling; kept for a follow-up if the run generates reception coverage.
- Art Basel × UBS digital-era film series — Episode 1 (Sept 30) features Beeple, Mohr, Herndon/Dryhurst, Chung. Sponsor-produced content; weaker claim to independence.
