The lead
Auriea Harvey’s Ready To Die opened at Heft Gallery (300 Broome, NYC) on September 9 and runs through October 9, with an artist-led installation ceremony on October 1. The show holds 48 works: Carrara and Bardiglio marble monuments, wax vessels, milled birch reliefs, and a generative video that never repeats. The anchor is the Amulets series — 30 unique hand-finished sculptures in faience, marble, pewter, and alabaster, priced $1,000–$5,000. Twenty-seven of thirty sold in the first eleven days.
One work, two states
The gallery’s phrase for the amulet format: “one work, two states.” Each physical piece carries a digital counterpart — a spatial Gaussian-splat portrait recorded on Ethereum. Collectors become custodians of both states. On September 8, the night before opening, every amulet was named at the Feast of Treasures, a ceremony with sound by Rena Anakwe.
The pipeline
The marble monuments began as 3D scans, were modeled digitally, carved in Italy on a seven-axis machine, then finished by hand. Mother / Child cuts a mother and infant from a single Carrara block — neither figure can be lifted free. Wax vessels over 3D-printed PolyCast can convert to bronze via lost-wax casting (a bronze edition of five at $2,500). The Dance of Death and Time composites three films live; it never runs the same way twice.
Why Harvey matters here
Harvey built the 90s net art site Entropy8Zuper!, then games with Tale of Tales — winners of the Independent Games Festival Nuovo Award. Her work is in the Whitney, Buffalo AKG, and Walker collections, and Rhizome’s Net Art Anthology. Her first survey ran at the Museum of the Moving Image. She is Rome-based and represented by bitforms. Two days after this opening, Serpentine named her one of its first four FAE R&D Fellows (£10,000 each, chosen from 1,000+ applicants).
The conservation question
Gaussian splatting dates to a 2023 paper; its viewers are three years old. The marble will likely outlive the file format it is twinned with. A ledger entry that needs a living renderer to be seen makes a strange kind of double for stone — and the show stages that tension deliberately, in a chamber built around passage and what carries over.
