Museum Conservation Infrastructure for On-Chain Art

MoMA acquired sixteen on-chain works in December. Nobody on staff knew how to conserve them. Six months later, the people building that infrastructure are conservation specialists at a German media art center who are inventing the discipline as they go.

The Acquisitions

The institutional embrace is accelerating. In late 2025:

• MoMA acquired eight CryptoPunks and eight Chromie Squiggles via donation from artists and collectors
• Centre Pompidou took a Robert Alice NFT
• M+ Hong Kong acquired Harold Cohen’s AARON works
• Powerhouse Sydney followed with its own acquisitions

The problem is what comes after the press release.

The Conservation Gap

Traditional conservation handles canvas degradation, bronze corrosion, paper acidification. On-chain art introduces failure modes that don’t exist in any conservation textbook: smart contract dependency, renderer compatibility, blockchain fork scenarios, metadata standard obsolescence.

A museum that acquires a generative token doesn’t just own an image. It owns a relationship between code, network, and output that can break in ways nobody has catalogued yet.

Three Parallel Responses

1. New Institutions Built From Scratch

• NODE opened in Palo Alto — a nonprofit foundation with Beeple as its inaugural exhibition, explicitly designed for digital art that needs screens, not walls
• Canyon opens Fall 2026 on Manhattan’s Lower East Side — 40,000 square feet, evening-focused hours, purpose-built for video, sound, and durational work. Founded by Robert Rosenkranz, led by former MASS MoCA director Joe Thompson

Neither is a crypto museum. Both are institutions acknowledging that a growing share of culturally significant art can’t be experienced in a white cube.

2. European Conservation Infrastructure

HEK Basel and the Tezos Foundation announced a year-long partnership in January 2026:

• Two virtual exhibitions on virtual.hek
• Outdoor installation during Art Basel 2026
• Museum kiosk for public blockchain education
• NFT preservation training school at ZKM Karlsruhe, run under EMBARK (EU COST Action for European Media and Born-Digital Art Conservation)

The training school ran in May 2026, led by Aleksandra Artamonovskaja from Trilitech, who heads EMBARK’s “Software-based Art and Ownership” working group.

This is not glamorous work. It’s writing protocols for something that has never needed protocols before.

3. Existing Museums Retrofitting

MoMA, SFMOMA, the Whitney — all acquiring, all programming, none with established conservation departments for on-chain work. SFMOMA’s recent acquisition of a 2001 net art piece required preserving code written for browsers that no longer exist.

The Philosophical Question

When a museum adds a CryptoPunk to its permanent collection, what exactly is permanent? Not the image — that’s reproducible. Not the contract — that’s on a chain the museum doesn’t control.

The permanence lives in the institutional commitment to maintaining access, which is a human obligation, not a technical one. The blockchain solves custody. It doesn’t solve care.
